This week I had an interesting experience. For the most part I work with older adults in facilities that offer skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s care. One of facilities also includes rehab residents and I often see younger adults there. One of the residents I work with is a young man in his 30’s who has suffered with a spinal cord injury. In one of the groups we were singing original songs that the group had written. At the end of one of the songs this young man looked at me and said, “I can’t believe you are not out in the world sharing that beautiful voice of yours.”
I have been singing since I was very young and it is something I absolutely love to do. I thanked my resident and told him that I wish I had realized my love for singing earlier and, perhaps, gone the performance route. In my heart I am a “rocker chick”
Then I realized that I am already sharing my voice with the world….the clients I work with. At that moment I connected with my talent and my passion for what I do every day as a music therapist. It is these times of connection that remind me that I am truly on the path that I was born to be on.
Do you feel connection to your passion as a creative arts therapist? Are you clear about your passion? Do you recognize your mission and vision as you work to build your private practice? If not, I encourage you to take some quiet time and reflect on what you are passionate about, where your talents lie, and what your mission is for becoming a creative arts therapist.
